Actually, the regional 'dex/Pokémon distribution is one of the easiest things to change, especially since the majority of Trainers don't have teams defined by more than species and levels. There's a reason why changing that alone is the most common kind of ROM hack. At Game Freak's level, it could be done in less than a week; the release wouldn't even need be pushed back a full month.
But yes, I'd so accept this. A slightly later release EASILY beats being stuck with only the first Gen until the next game comes out.

Doing original 151 again would be dumb, mainly due to how annoying cross-gen evolutions and breeding not being available was in FRLG. And that was a game where you only really noticed with Golbat.

In a game with Day/Night and stuff like Tangrowth's evo methods, they'd be better off not trying to restrict it. Hide some of the cross gen evolutuon items behind lots of stuff so it's hard to stumble on by accident maybe, but even that alone would add at least a dozen mons to the dex. You don't even need to give them to NPCs either

It wasn't as obvious, since a lack of day/night meant they wouldn't try to evolve like Combat would. But unless they gut a lot of features, it would be glaringly obvious in these new ones.

The irony is that the Gamecube has a built in clock, but XD is the game they decided to make use of an alternative evolution method for Espeon and Umbreon that didn't utilise time instead of the mainline games without clocks.
