Didn't you notice how small every city is (or even islands for what matters)?
That's the same issue as with Skyrim
In previous 2D games, cities and regions were small (due to hardware limitation), but you could use your imagination to put things on scale
That's the basic idea behind GB/GBA rpg maps
For exemple, Kanto was supposed to look like in the anime
Meanwhile, Alola is in full 3D, but still retains the ridicously small scale of the previous 2D overworlds
The end result is that the entirety of Alola feels like it's the size of a city
