At least XY let me play for five minutes without being interrupted by an NPC popping up and saying inane shit. The friends are a godsend compared to Lillie, Hau, and Kukui. Also it had dungeons.
It's fucking sad when you have less dungeons than Kalos of all regions.

Jesus christ. I can give you that the cutscenes can be obnoxious, but the "friends" are literally the worst characters Pokémon has ever had.

The story isn't that great bro. As far as RPGs go Sun and Moon's story is really underwhelming. I appreciate that they broke away from some of their previous patterns but honestly they could have done a lot better than this.

My point is that they left you alone much more than your "friend" NPCs in Gen 7. Neither Hau or Lillie say anything of importance for 90% of the story yet you're forced to watch them rotate and motion in place. The encounters with the friends in XY were really brief in comparison for the most part.
It also helps that Kalos is more of region than Alola.
