While you might have a point on overrated, to say following pokemon is functionally useless from a gameplay perspective whilst also saying that it aids in improving the atmosphere of a game just seems like wilful ignorance to me.
Comfy is an aesthetic that many people want from their casual games. Contrary to popular belief, pokemon isn't srs bisns and is mostly a casual game, even for the people who wouldn't consider themselves casual fans. You know, unless you're a 100% competitive-only faggot who doesn't care about the game itself and just wants to get to the battle simulator.
Denying small comfy features like following pokemon in a lighthearted game with little to no edge in sight is like saying that dismemberment in a gory hack and slash doesn't serve the gameplay. It doesn't make bad gameplay good but it makes good gameplay better. And given that pokemon has barely changed since its inception from the core gameplay, you can't really argue that it's that bad.
