The sexually dimorphic Pokémon in-game both appear at the same time, models on the same rig. Depending on the game telling them male or female it makes one model invisible. This is just the model without one being invisible.

I’ve seen a lot of people discounting this leak because of Pikachu’s tail. But if it was so obvious to us, then why didn’t the leaker bother changing it, if it was such a simple element. Someone mentioned something along the lines that the male and female models were probably overplayed on top of one another which is probably what’s going on.

That's different tho, because the sprite is only made up of the individual pixels, it's just a bitmap. With a 3D model, you have the 3D mesh/geometry, and then the 2D texture mapped onto that mesh. They're two separate things that can be divorced from one another and applied separately. Most people just refer to the mesh as the model itself.

The textures aren't necessarily part of the model file. You're just discussing irrelevant technical details we have literally no way to know about at the moment, since we don't even know if this game exists, let alone how it works.

Model itself is barely the same, seems Pikachu has a bit bigger head and longer arms (might be perspective). however people have theorized that the tail is different because it's both the male and female model loaded at the same time (you can see some clipping at the edges)
The textures however are a bit different as the one on the left is almost flat but the one on the right has much more shading and isn't washed out. There also seems to be, in my eyes, a bit of a watercolor aesthetic to Pikachu on the right.

I can't tell if Pikachu's mouth on the right is a model or a texture, but I will assume model. It looks a bit jutted out. If I could see how both the idle animations for Pikachu looked like it'd be a bit easier to compare.

the model is one half of a finished asset, the painted car is an asset. the textures are simply a part of that asset and can be swapped out, often on the fly.

The facial expressions on the pokemon characters in the gen 6 and 7 games are literally done by swapping out the "paint" over the face parts of the model. But only the face uvs are affected.

A model is a representation of something. That's the literal, English definition of what that word means.

if you change the color of the model you're changing what it represents. So yes, changing the texture does in fact change the model you fucktards.

This is the very first fucking thing they teach in 3D modelling classes yet /vp/ can't even get it right. Instead there's this giant circlejerk over this altered made up definition of what a model is probably because one guy thought he was smart when XY came out and everyone else decided to parrot him instead of actually checking their facts. People in this thread are confusing "mesh" for "model" and think the two are synonymous. They aren't.

I don't know enough about 3D models to contribute much here, but I do know that in the new Pokemon center in Nihonbashi they have an AR Pokedex with 3D models and animations and it looks like all Pokemon got new 3D models from it because they weren't the same as any I'd seen in the game - the look more like the gif with Pikachu shaking its head.

As someone who has taken 3D modeling classes, they don't have such strict or autistic definitions for these things. When most students say "model" they're referring to the mesh/geometry, and when they say "texture", they're referring to the mat from the hypershader. It may not be technically correct, I'm not entirely sure, but any 3D modeling teacher would understand what you mean.

Nothing about it is strict or autistic. Referring to a mesh as a model is correct because a mesh is still a 3D representation of an object. Referring to a model as a mesh+texture is correct because it's a 3D representation of an object. What isn't correct is trying to pretend that taking a model and changing its color is still the same model and acting like a smartass when people suggest so.
