How's your day going, anon?

What are your thoughts on the 3D art style that Pokemon has used recently?

Personally, I think it looks aweful.
Wouldn't something like this look much cleaner?

I personally love the 3D style they used in Gen VII. I like the idea of Octopath Traveler-esque style graphics, but not for the main series. A Mystery Dungeon game would look really neat with those.

I don't mind 3D, the models just need to change. more animation, better color tones, more realistic proportions, just something that makes them feel alive. I hope they're planning on fixing it now that the main series got a hardware upgrade. Using the same old washed-out 3DS models and textures in a somewhat better resolution is just lazy.

I think 3d models are a good idea, if only because it's easier to implement certain features. For example, if they want to have a pokemon appear in the overworld, they don't need an entirely different set of sprites for it compared to the in-battle version. You just need the single model.

What they need to do is make the colors less washed out and introduce proper lighting and shading. As long as they do that, it'll make the models look better, since they're already decent quality.

From there, it's a matter of overworld design. The maps often feel cramped due to the top down view and how narrow a lot of areas are. We're on a tropical island and in most places it's impossible to just look out over the ocean.

On 3DS it would indeed have been better than what we got
But with the Switch, the minimum we can expect is something like pic related

The bloom in Octopath is physically painful. It's a shame that lighting (with less bloom, thought the bloom meme died a few years back) wouldn't have worked with Bravely Default's hand drawn backgrounds. And the character models had a nice style to them, too.
