Why'd this game have such great route and town themes and such mediocre battle themes?

The orchestration makes the world feel so poignant and exciting, but they insist on the same generic guitar and synths for battle themes, and they're not even well-executed.

The trainer battle is decent. Not the best, not the worst

Kalos has some FANTASTIC route themes, yeah. I think the one that's introduced around Route 8 and plays for most of Coastal Kalos is another personal favorite!
But to be honest, I actually am also a fan of its battle music, personally! It hit the tone of the games pretty well and fit perfectly. The obvious ones that jump out to me as not so great are the Gym Leader and Elite Four themes, not the basic Trainer theme, and even those were actually pretty great in context even if they're not my personal favorites to listen to on their own.
That said, I think the real weak point has to be the dungeon themes. There's really only one main one, and then the Route 14 theme got used for a few caves as well (Glittering and Terminus, maybe also Connecting) and Victory Road got its own theme. It's just a little jarring to me that Santalune Forest, which is indeed catchy and pleasing at first, got recycled for Reflection Cave... and Frost Cavern... and Winding Woods... and the bird chirps that made it interesting in Santalune Forest were cut out for the two caves... and even then it's only about 35 seconds long before looping... and even within the loop, it's just several variations on an even shorter motif. It worked well as an early-game forest, but it was relied on a bit too much; I'd have loved if Reflection Cave and Frost Cavern at least got another theme to SHARE (and preferably a bit less repetitive of one) even if not every single dungeon was going to get its own music.
