When Pokemon did this, at least in the first few gens, they introduced you to your first Pokemon and immediately introduced you to battling, then they send you on an errand through a short route with a town on the other side (gen 1 introduces you to Pokemarts in this way by making you enter one in order to progress), and on the way back to the hometown you learn how to hop ledges and then get your Pokedex afterward which now has several seen Pokemon and one owned so you can understand how the pokedex works right away. The early Pokemon runarounds are actually well thought out, but Evocreo makes you talk to the prof to unlock basic menu options which is pointless and your mom to get 5 links (pokeballs), which should be optional or at least not so far out of the way. If you try to leave, the main character tells the player that you should go talk to these people and does not give you any direction as to where they are in the scattered map which is much too big and zoomed in while you move much too slow. Meanwhile, there are buildings with doors you can't enter and retards walking around who say meaningless shit like "Thanks for finding me!" so you don't even learn about the mechanics or the world around you through NPC dialogue.
