can someone explain to me the actual advantages to real time combat? people throw it around a lot as something they want, but what does it actually add to the series?

is it though? realism would be directing AI or something, but anyway I think you actually mean immersion. but for me, I think it would be more immersive to continue to direct pokemon rather than embody them.

I wouldn't want real time combat for the main series because I always want the vibe to be about you as a human having limited control over trained creatures. Instead, I'd like to see a reimagining of the Mystery Dungeon series with realtime combat.

I think it's something for a spinoff, not a main game. But it would be one hell of a spinoff that may even break off and become its own thing. As for pros:

Hitting a button at the right time is far less strategic. Strategy can involve physical action but it isn't about physical, it's about the tactics involved.

There is a time and a place for action and it's not in a game that's the monster collecting version of chess.
