I picked red version because I thought charizard was cooler. I thought everyone would think the same way as me and pick charmander so I picked squirtle to have the advantage. Then it turned out everyone else picked squirtle/bulbasaur anyway.

Yeah actually. Hadn't thought about it for a long time, but it came back to me instantly. That and Thunderbolt stuck with me the most. I used Raichu and Blastoise more than anything.

Parents bought me Red, I chose Charmander, I figured he'd become dragon on the front and that appealed to me more than the tortoise with guns and it would have been a complete gamble with Bulbasaur.
No regrets, Charmander path was rough back then. Struggling early game made me appreciate Charmander and his eventual evolutions. Charizard is still my favourite Pokémon, people rag on it as a shit choice but there's history there.

I knew Ash's rival in the anime was called Gary but 'cause of his American accent I interpreted it being spelt as 'Gery'. Still get a chuckle.out of that.

Probably to do with the fact that we got red and blue version.
And also that the cartoon featured Charizard and Blastoise and not (really) Venusaur.

Kids picked what made them feel the most excited, so of course it was those two. And most adults who didn't get molested are still made happy by things that made them happy as a kid.
