A better way of seeing their progress is to look at Black and White as that was the last sprite based game they did while they're clearly still getting used to 3D and it's clear they're limited by hardware and attempting to mimic the look of sprites.

Because they're not tied to weak handheld systems anymore. They have a bit more power to work with now and can't fall back on system restraints as an excuse. If all we get is slightly better-looking S/M games from now on, then that'll look bad for them unless the games are incredibly fun and full of content to make people overlook the subpar graphics.

COnsidering how successful pokemon is, money shouldn't be an issue.

Time constraint is only ever a self imposed issue. If Gamefreak has problems releasing yearly games it shouldn't release games every year. Companies like Ubisoft put out Assassin's Creed games every year and manage to add more than Mantine Surf.

I'm starting to be skeptical about even this. Even with only one year, a separate team should have been able to add more to USUM than Mantine Surf. I feel like they have one team, and a couple of interns working on useless shit like "sidequests" that fan hackers can do better

do you actually think that game freak doesn't get an absurd amount of money from the pokemon games? they are not just contracted workers, they have stakes in the pokemon company, they get a decent chuck of pretty much everything pokemon related even when they are not involved.
Even if they were to get only 5% of the pokemon money that would still be more money than pretty much 99% of every other game developer studio in the world

What I do know is that they have one of the most successful franchises of all time, they can literally add a few new lines of dialogue and new minigames and sell MILLIONS of copies of the same game again, yet Gamefreak acts like some poor vulnerable innocent indie studio.

I do play other games.

But I also like pokemon. I miss when pokemon was good. DLC exists now, there is no excuse for USUM to also exist. Capcom tried doing that shit for as long as they could and eventually their fanbase turned on them with UMVC3. Hopefully Gamefreak wises up before fans start shitting on them too

A big part of this is Masuda. When they leap to the gameboy advance, he chose to basically make a fangame based on the first two rather than allowing Pokemon to evolve naturally. Every single game he's made since has just been another "Red and Blue with new stuff, except with better-ish graphics". You can see a huge difference the moment Ohmori stepped onboard and started asking "Do we really NEED gyms? Does anyone actually like HM moves? Maybe we can use the dexnav to make it feel like the Pokemon are actually in the grass instead of just being random encounters?"

Well, honestly, if we're just talking about graphics then what's the worst a professional game developing studio can make with that technology? Examples, please? I literally only played Pokemon games on the GBA, as well as the port of DOOM which had extremely good graphics that I'm pretty sure no other game had on the system. The GBA's graphics were pretty much the same as the SNES from what I could tell, and RS seemed like they were pretty on par with the capabilities.

Compare the overworld of nearly any GBA RPG to pic related. Dragon Quest Monsters 3 is a good example, since it uses a similar art style, but GBA RPGs could have some outright spectacular overworld art at times.

They are just going to upscale the current pokemon models.

People will be expecting photo realistic graphics (which is retarded) and most likely gamefreak will opt for a cel shaded look. Even if screenshots of the cel shaded characters look okay, they will have awful animations and some creepy smiling face that never changes the whole game. Overworld will just look okay, especially if they try to make it bigger, it will just be a bunch of copy paste assets.

Sprites have potential to be beautiful, but there are too many pokemon to have owl boy or metal slug quality sprites an animations. Gen 5 was probably the epitome of sprite work they are willing to do and a lot of gen 5 pokemon just looked like creepy puppets with barely attached moveable joints.

Even the overworld sprites didn't look that good, and that's not because sprites have no potential, but it's because gamefreak has too many pokemon to animate. Even the GBA had better looking sprites than DP

In a lot of ways I think pokemon models in Gen 7 look better than those, it's just that your game has way better animations (and even then the animations have tons of room for improvement)

I would rather them add lots of interesting and natural looking animations than try to go for photorealistic graphics or shit like that.

To be fair, Minish Cap was a late release on the system, in fact it was released in North America after the DS was already released. RS came out in 2002, and with ever-changing technology in game development, a couple more years goes a long way towards perfecting the aesthetics. Unfortunately, Pokemon is usually rushed because it's such a popular series that Nintendo relies on to sell systems.

It was previously 33/32/32/3 for Game Freak, Nintendo/Creatures/4Kids respectively and there's no reason not to assume when it was purposely set up to leave GF the biggest shareholder that the other 3 weren't returned equally making it 34/33/33 now.

In other words, they get the majority share of the money.the entire franchise makes.

As of late 2016 they've made about 20 billion dollars, in other words, since the franchise has made about 58 billion.
