There's something I don't understand. I get that the Dark type is supposed to be the related to evil and dirty, underhanded fighting methods and not literal darkness (as in the absence of light), yet its Z-Move seems to contradict that. Why is that? Is there any explanation?

I dunno man, I'm just following the facts. If the Japanese name is anything to go by, the type is first and foremost related to evil than the absence of light. I guess you can even grasp at straws and say that the absence of light is evil because many bad guys in fiction want to drown the world in darkness and/or get rid of the light.

Uh... I never said that, though. Dark types are not even evil in the conventional sense of the word. Sure, some do things that we consider evil when done by a human, such as stealing something. Yet we do not consider said actions to be evil when done by an animal such as raccoons because it's in their nature and they do not really have malicious intent behind their actions. This applies to Pokemon such as Purrloin; the action of stealing is evil, but the Pokemon themselves are not evil when doing it because there is no malicious intent behind it.

Evil and "darkness" are usually unseparable in many works of fiction. Many villains use darkness manipation and many darkness manipulation users are villains especially in older fictions. Cant we accept that dark type in pokemon may represent both ?

Nope. It's name in Japan is literally "Evil Pulse" and it's description says it's concentrated dark thoughts.

The three dark moves with actual ties to darkness are Night Daze, Dark Void, and the Z move. Ghost typing has a lot more in common with actual darkness.

Ghost types are primarily about darkness with all their shadowy moves and shit, but darkness has its ties to evil motivations so it creeps into the Dark type from time to time.

They probably just took a page from the english name since there's no real way to make a flashy move that's only about pure evil(at least without bumping up the age rating). The best they could probably do on the grounds of evil would be some kind of souped up Nasty Plot and that doesn't really work.

Oh, for some reason I thought you were talking about general usage, at least that's what I got from following the reply chain. But no, in Pokemon, the "evil" label works well and makes 100% sense, because Pokemon doesn't care about deep, philosophical definitions. Pokemon is a kids franchise.

It could just be simplified to the Pokemon beating down the opponent mercilessly.

Maybe even combine it with the literal darkness aspect by using a cloud of darkness to blind the opponent, catching them off guard.

I think Evil type probably has one of those weird nuances that don't translate to English very well. "Evil" (Dark) is probably the best translation we've got, but don't take my word for it; I don't know shit about that kind of thing. Like you mentioned earlier, though, Ghost is another weird one, especially after seeing Acerola's "dead" Mimikyu.
