Pick Mudkip as your starter, Water/Ground is a great typing and matches up well against most gyms. As mentioned before in the thread, Slaking and Gardevoir are solid choices (Just be ready to plan around Slaking’s Truant)
Torkoal or Camerupt are excellent bulky fire types that can cover Swampert’s one weakness and also counter steel types that would give the rest of the team trouble.
Other than that maybe get you an electric type and a mon that can learn fly.

Don't bother with Camerupt. The 4x weakness to water is too crippling in this game. Torkoal is good though.

The Water issue makes Camerupt a more niche choice, it’s the price for good stab combo. Torkoal is slower and doesn’t get those powerful earthquakes but has less trouble with water. Depends on how willing to circumvent party weaknesses you are by switching, etc.

Grab a Claydol for good fun, and Magneton when you unlock New Mauville, they make a pretty great core for a team on Hoenn. They have at neutral coverage on everything
