Imagine the scientists finding this weird cat fetus that somehow shares DNA with every single Pokemon. Then, while they try to understand what it is, it gives birth to another unique monstruosity.
Now, compare it to retcon the movie made: "Own, let's make a clone of the cute kitteh with its pink hairs :3". And then an emo cat with huge thighs is born.
I still like modern mew, it has some nice tcg artwork, but nothing beats the original design.
