The games clearly state a living mew was discovered, captured, experimented on and gave birth to its clone child, Mewtwo.
The games and movie are very different takes in this case, and even if the movie is more iconic, the games never retconned this.

I still have a hard time believing that Mew literally gave birth. I know that real cloning requires an actual surrogate womb, but it seems so out of place in the world of egg laying pokemon.

Either Mew was discovered and cloned before the Pokedex was invented, or the one Mew that was discovered was kept secret to be experimented on/cloned and as such was not catalogued in the Pokedex.

To start a theoretical third tangent here but, couldn't the scientists have:
-found extinct pokemon dna in fossils and analyzed
-subsequently found some sort of dna strand complexes always present inside the inherent dna of each pokemon from every era
-isolated such sequences
-repeated and filled them
-creating mewtwo because if they use such generic data it comes to something close to mew, who is the origin of pokemons iirc.

I thought the main series 3D models had washed out colours to match the official artwork. Most of the side games and spin-off still use the darker sprite colours though.

They've been pushing more and more towards it being this sympathetic anti-hero rather than a Frankenstein's monster fetus.
