This was odd to say the least. I would not have complained at all if this was the end of the anime, because it certainly feels like it. It's not exactly how I expected the anime to end, but close enough.

Yajiima wanted to make his fanfic show different from the rest of the show. That's why XY has the least amount of refrences to other series, no ORAS promotion, no obligatory Ash cross dressing episode etc.

XY ends with its main characters both basically coming in 2nd place in their respective fields, but deciding they need to continue to journey because they still have a ways to go. At the end there's an open promise that they'll meet again as even better people. Outside of Ash straight up becoming a pokemon master I don't think you could end the series on a better or more personal note.

Also Ash referenced Dawn's Piplup in episode 22 of the XY anime.

And Cilan appearing in the 2nd bonus episode after XY&Z episode 47. And that they had a Pokémon doctor in episode 63 of XY, most likely the 2nd episode if you count episode 47 of the original series.

And yes, Steven Stone has a recurring role after his one-shot appearence in the Advanced Generation anime.

XY is the only series without an old character cameo. Iris was next in line for a cameo and she was ignored, May could have appeared for ORAS and she was ignored. Hell, even Misty could have thereotically appeared here instead of in SM.

No he wasn’t. They dedicated two of the Mega specials to Mega Rayquaza, Primal Groudon, and Primal Kyogre. They introduced Shota who promoted Mega Sceptile, and the Blaziken Mask got a bigger role to show off Mega Blaziken. And Serena ended up picking up Pokémon Contests at the end of XY and left for Hoenn.

Only reason May didn’t appear was because her seiyuu literally can’t voice act anymore
