I don't remember which series it was in but there was an entire episode of a few episodes run where they kept cutting away to a Slowpoke yo transition scenes. It would get a step closer to evolution every cutaway, putting its tail in the water, and falling asleep on the shore. In the last one, it wakes up and lifts it's tail out of the water to reveal that it's evolved. It says "Slowpoke" a few times as it wakes up, and when it sees it's tail It's like "Slowpoke? Oh... SlowBRO!" so it's always been canon.

It's not Cubone. Let the fan theory go. It was never the original plan, in fact baby kanga used to be in RBG and they took it out at the last second, meaning baby kanga and Cubone were both in the game at one point.

I'd consider it an alternate form of Shellder, only achievable in a simbiotic relation with Slowpoke, simple as that.

It's kind of like the Mantyke+Remoraid deal. But I always wonder if this could theoretically also be the only de-evolution, as the Slowpoke itsel does not actually evolve. Then we'd have a detached alternate form of Shelder, or perhaps it would revert like other alterable forms of Pokemon. Maybe it's more akin to Kyurem/Necrozma fusion.

Slowpoke does change. Not only are Slowbro and Slowking different physically than Slowpoke, the Pokédex also states that Shellder's venom changes Slowpoke physically: Slowking becomes very smart and Slowbro becomes more resistant to pain.

Maybe it could be Trapinch, considering he is a "ninja" and what not, I always imagined Scizor hiding but showing his claws, attracting the predator who eats the Pokémon they are supposed to represent, just for them to be attacked by Scizor and being eaten by it.

That's the indigo league episode after the SS Anne sinks and the kids go to an island with giant (robotic) pokemon.
Pikachu and company have dialogues too, and they find a restaurant being attended by another pokemon, not sure if it is an slowbro, but slowpoke appears at the beginning and ending of that episode
