I don't understand how anyone who grew up with Gen 1 could dislike Gen 2. The hype was huge and the game actually lived up to it, for the most part. Sure, it doesn't look like too much now when compared to the new games and remakes, but at the time it came out? Man, it was some good shit.

If you hate Gen 2, odds are good you probably started later in the series. And there's nothing inherently wrong with that. But if you're going to criticize the original fans of a series that you are only ever going to be a latecomer to, well, maybe you should reconsider whether you actually belong here at all.
