They where replaced in HGSS for Pokéathlon which was actually good and challenging (specially getting perfect points for that Soccer Event). It also used very well the bottom screen.

Just like how Triple and Rotation battles were dropped. Because Gamefreak themselves realized that Unova was a mistake.

Triples and Rotations were dropped because Gamefreak were morons who used HD tier high poly models for a handheld game. This is what causes the awful FPS, and would likely result in the game crashing if used with Triples and Rotations.
