Gen 3 was essentially a reboot. It didn't have Team Rocket, There's no Kanto and Johto, There isn't even any compatabilty with the previous two generations. Most people were older and didn't want to go through all the hassle so they moved on while a new generation got their first taste with Pokemon. That's why Hoennbabbies are just as vocal as genwunners, it's their gen 1.

Honestly Pokémon if you look at the sales trends was on a downhill slope from day one but ruby and sapphire is where it started to kind of settled. So those who love the franchise stayed on and newcomers fluctuated in and out like normal but there’s a huge population of early supporters who gave up after gold and silver so gen 3 is seen as the beginning of the bad. When in actuality Pokémon’s honestly been the same from the beginning.

You can't even catch 50% of the pokemon in R/S
You can't transfer pokemon from older gens
Needs shitty spin off games to complete the dex

People only meme on it because of the excess of trumpets and water routes, but Emerald is unironically one of the best Pokemon games thanks to the battle frontier, fixing all of the problems that Ruby and Sapphire had, etc.

I watched my friends play pokemon blue/silver for 2-3 years and then I got my own copy of Gold and played it for a year. Then Ruby/sapphire was released and it had actual colors and it was just a far better game than silver to me. Back when internet really wasnt that big and you couldnt check secrets and we had to figure out how to get the regis ourselves etc. Ruby was just so refreshing after watching and playing blue/silver/gold for so long. Also I got to play Red myself first time in gen3 thru FireRed.
Thats why gen 3 is my favorite after gen 5

For me, I was too young to really understand how the game worked when it came out, so I was never able to get very far. Since I didn't enjoy it as much it doesn't have the nostalgia factor for me.

When ORAS came out I tried it again as an adult, but it still just didn't do it for me.

Because RS didn't live up to the hype and were overall a step down from GSC. People were expecting as many improvements to the series as GSC added without the removal of the already existing ones. Emerald saved the gen quite a bit but the damage was done.

Idk, everyone I know loves gen 3. I started on Crystal so to me gen 3 is my first “new gen” and I have a lot of nostalgia for it. I didn’t even realize the trading/transferring thing was an issue that made people ragequit until later. I still kinda don’t understand
