It's pretty cool in the anime since it can turn into any Pokemon it has memorized at will. So for example, you could turn into a Zapdos vs. a Gyarados.

I like how the idea that ditto cant transform its face is pretty much hardline canon at this point, even though that concept was originally introduced because ONE particular ditto from ONE particular episode of the show wasn't able to transform its face, and that episode made a plot point of the fact that most Dittos are able to perfectly replicate creatures and objects, and the fact that this one couldnt change its face was an anomaly.
