Is pulling another Hoenn and cutting Gen 8 off from all the previous installments the only way to save the series from the balance trainwrecks that were generations 6 and 7?

Nah. They need to nerf the damage boost grassy/psychic/electric terrains provide, the stronger physical moves (like when XY nerfed the likes of Fire Blast, Draco Meteor and Aura Sphere), and maybe even nerf Beast Boost somehow.

Considering GF's modus operandy, it's pretty likely they're gonna try to nerf the Tapus somehow, if the Weather abilities, Gale Wings, Pixilate-like boosts and Mega-Khangaskan/Gengar were any indication.
