I don't think the anime was ever "good", but I'd say Kanto, Johto, Sinnoh and Kalos are pretty enjoyable. So, just ignore Hoenn, Unova and Alola. Hoenn wasn't even THAT bad though.

Johto was pretty bad. A lot of the episodes people remember fondly, like the whirl cup, were kind of boring. The gems tend to be the ones that nobody fucking remembers, like Fly Me to the Moon.
