look at how trash gen 6 was
look at how usum were an even more incremental upgrade than previous generation sequel games
look at how bland and monotonous so many games in the series are

Because the babies need to have their hand held enough to necessitate a new game.
Imagine SM/USUM without all the tutorial sections, handholding battles, and intentionally gimped routes/trials. It's actually impossible to do because they specifically shrunk the region down to be easier for casuals to get through without breaking their attention.
This way, there's a definite "ooh pretty colors" game and a game for people who want to play an actual game.

No I get that, but SM/USUM and now LGPE look casualized to the point where changing the AI wouldn't make it a harder experience.
If you added harder battles to SM, it would still be an 8 hour tutorial section of a game with occasional battles. The game is too on the rails for that kind of thing to matter, and that casualized gameplay is what tests well with dumb kids and genwunners who played RBY when they didn't know how to read.
