the entirety of generation 7. not perfect execution, certainly, but genius sonority did a far better job with their first two games than game freak is doing with the IP after over twenty years at the helm
people don't like colosseum or XD for the same reason they don't like black and white-- the games pushed people out of their comfort zones. a lot of people will deny being gen wunners but if you tell them they can't catch one of their favorites in the game right away they'll get goosebumps and start stroking out. it's why after generation 5 they went completely overboard with saturating the wild pokemon encounter lists with almost every pokemon ever made, and it only served to completely devalue the idea of "regions" of a world if you can catch the overwhelming majority of every region's roster all in one.
we didn't need "a real pokemon RPG on console" at the time, and the shadow pokemon games were far better than any more "real" title we could have gotten.
