Still Gen 7, despite the incompatibility. It was confirmed that you can get Alolan forms in the game, and considering the time of release, it wouldn't make sense to fit it anywhere else.

Stadium, Colosseum, PBR etc. have been some times referred to as "side series" to separate them from actual spin-offs with no connectivity to the main series (like Dash, PMD, Conquest, etc), but they've literally never been called "mainline" games.

So does Gale of Darkness, which still uses the battle mechanics from the main series instead of GO. Even catching Shadow Pokemon is still closer to the mainline than not even battling Pokemon.

Every Pokemon game has main series characters since they have Pokemon, which are all main characters. And if you're talking about humans only, then Snap, the TCG, Stadium, and Stadium 2 are mainline too since they have mainline characters with major roles.

I can only see this happening if they started going political in Pokemon (which they did in Gen 5 with the whole Pokemon rights thing).
The sad part is that Gen 5 actually get that Star Fox Zero situation where is failed (at least compared to other Pokemon games) because of 1 or 2 reasonably sized faults (being the previously mentioned plot and Pokemon designs such as Garbodor and the Monkey trio) while still having a lot of what people wanted.
And as Japs do, they assumed all aspects of Gen 5 were the problem and not small amount of faults.
Now that I think of it, there will be no winning with these games.
If they are successful, kiss battling mechanics and Pokemon past Gen 1 good bye and say hello to GO pandering forever.
If these games flop, say good bye to future remakes as they will assume that kids don't want remakes anymore.

Trials in SMUSUM still share a lot with Gyms, being an area requiring you to do some puzzle or maze, then fight some boss. The difference being Gym Leaders being team based and Totem Pokemon being super powered Pokemon.
Let's Go's catching mechanic is completely different from the wild battles from the main series. You don't even battle the Pokemon. You just flick around a joycon/move your fingers on a touch screen, where as in the mainline games, you had to actually battle the wild Pokemon to the point of weakening it.
The latter is completely different change where the former is mixing up the system to be fresh. But I do know you're just acting retarded on purpose.

In the original concept (see anime) it was supposed to be catchable 100% after being defeated, so I assume in the mainline series you literally just killed them when their HP reached zero. So the battle system was just added as a gameplay element and now they are trying to balance it into the original direction.

Not saying that this concept now is better, but it is still an advancement
