The "a few routes" and "buildings in which you battle" are separate points. You explore a few routes, that's a core part of Pokemon experience you get in every game, from start to finish.
But standing in a fucking building, fighting battles with no growth of your Pokemon, no contribution towards completion of the story, that's not. Sure, trying to earn a frontier medal might add a couple of hours to your playtime, but it's not giving you hours worth of content. The content is the same, repeated over and over again.

Literally every other battle in Pokemon has a purpose. They give you money, which can let you buy items and save time. They give you EXP, which lets you beat the Gym Leaders. They let you get from Point A to Point B. They contribute towards the story completion.

Literally none of this applies to Battle Facility fights. There's no reward money, no EXP, no place to get to, no progression of story. All they do is pad out the game. That's not content. Fighting wild Pokemon in tall grass is more "content" than this. This is equivalent to standing in a fucking line, so you can get the thing you want.

Admittedly, this doesn't apply as much to Emerald BF. The Pyramid, the Pike, they had more going inside.

How does that make a difference exactly? I don't think you understand this but the content is in the battles themselves not the things between them. Everything revolves around the battles.

You gain money to buy items to use in battle, most often pokeballs.
You gain exp so your pokemon can learn new moves and evolve to perform better in battles.
Where A is Brock's battle B is Misty's.

Are you beginning to understand now? They are the central component to the game.

If you fight a random trainer to get strong enough or get money to use against Brock, you end up beating Brock, unlocking new areas to explore and progress the game.

I like the postgame content as much as anyone, but normal battles in battle facilities are the most boring part of it. It's the gimmicks that make it interesting, the one fight against a special trainer you look forward to that makes it worth it. If I just wanted fights, I'd play Showdown or just battle online in-game.

Hey kiddo, exp, money and story is the padding. Battles are where the major mechanics come into play, hell you're playing a game that was designed around multiplayer battles and trading.
Oh yeah and you earn BP in the same way you earn money and that nets you items so I guess it is content according to you.

Grow for what exactly? If battles aren't the content you claim they are then the exp is all but pointless.

Despite simulators being fairly popular in the community. With that said that doesn't change the fact that it's padding, you can change that for any other method of growth and it wouldn't change a thing about the game as it is because the part that you actually interact with and think about its contained in the battles otherwise you're just playing a walking sim of some kind without any real content. Get it?

Among a fraction of the playerbase. And the main draw of those simulators is the human element. It's popular as a way to battle other people. As you said, one of the draws of Pokemon is playing it with your friends.
Remove people from Showdown. Make it a simulator that lets you fight only AI. See how popular it remains. It will be dead. I guarantee it.

Way overselling the multiplayer aspect. It's a small part of the appeal, a FAR cry from THE selling point. Case in point, every single Pokemon game has been pirated to death. Platinum actually was pirated as much as it sold in stores. And you literally cannot have multiplayer on DS emulators. Didn't subtract from Pokemon's popularity.

I won't deny people like battling each other. Showdown is a testament to to competitive battling. It's a gross overstatement to say it's an essential or even a big part of the experience.

This just in, you can battle with humans in the battle facilities too anon. Also regular PvP is the same kind of repetition and non content as the battle facilities because it doesn't promote growth or story progression that you said was the thing that makes content.

Small? I know this is a little before your time but before the anime came out a year later in japan it was the only selling point of the game and by that point it had already become extremely popular.

For that matter why do we need so many pokemon and types, having nearly 900 must take the developers forever to program and balance, we could make do with 1/6th of that...say around 150? most of the pokemon are pointless in the battle meta anyway

same goes for moves, why do we need harden and splash, they serve little battle purpose and are pointless

may as well take out the story too, the game is only about battling, that will free up LOTS of developer time

3D models take time to sculpt, and animate, so we should go back to 2D static images, animations are completely pointless features

May as well do away with the colour too, what point does it serve, colour was optional for gen 2

do we even need sprites or models anyway? couldnt battles be entirely text base with move choices? if all that matters is the battles, anythign more just takes time away for the devlopers

unless.. maybe... just maybe, part of the development process includes making things that enhance the user experience such as for those who like to immerse themselves in the world and adventure with a partner pokemon

Some people like the battles, some people like the adventure, the game caters to both if you dont like a feature dont use it. The games arent made just for you

Remember Preschooler Oliver? Man his completely optional battle on route 1 really contributed towards the completion of the story. It was probably one of the most critical moments of the game.

Remember Preschooler Oliver? Man his completely optional battle on route 1 really contributed towards the completion of the story. It was probably one of the most critical moments of the game.
