I've seen so many mixed opinions on Gen 5 on this board, I'm genuinely curious whether it's more liked or disliked. From what I've seen more of y'all like it but apparently it's really polarizing. (pic unrelated)

Personally I think the latter half of Gen 4 and all of Gen 5 was the peak of the franchise.

Gen1 fag here, although I grew up with Gen1 and Gen2, Gen5 is one of my favorites. Good story, good songs, nice mon, attempt to reinvent the game without needing to appeal to crazy things like Mega and Z-moves.

All the hate comes from Sinnohfags who think that gen 4 is superior all the others, cartoonfags or nostalgic people who in many cases don't even play the game anymore and criticize the design of some of the new mon.
Pure kino, particularly B&W2, I still play the damn game btw.

90% of all the BW hate back when the games came out came from people who didn't even play the games, complaining that Gamefreak were running out of ideas and shitting on all the new Pokémon whilst also praising Gen 1 for being exclusively god-tier designs. Obviously complete and utter bullshit, but it started the avalanche of Gen 5 hate because oh boy if that many people hate it then it surely must be actually bad.

When the games came out, the fans were pretty much positive about the designs and the games. It's just the normies that latched on bashed the games.

I started playing with gold and got off the wagon before gen 5 ever came out so I didn't give it a chance then.
But when I came back to Pokemon with OrAs I was so disappointed I quite the franchise until this year when I finally played White. I honestly think if I had played it at launch I would have never left the series.

Gen 5 would've avoided a LOT of its hate if they just didn't include the Garbodor, Vanilluxe, Amoongus and Klinklang lines. Those four on their own generated so much vocal shitposting hatred that the entirety of Gen 5 became doomed from the get-go.

Ironically enough those exact Pokémon (except Vanilluxe) were copies of Gen 1 Pokémon lines (Muk, Electrode and Magneton), and yet everyone who shat on them also said Gen 1 had the best designs of the franchise. 10/10 hypocrisy right there.

Everyone hated it back then, before BW were released, at least to what I experienced around social media and on reddit no I don't use reddit, but I check it during hype seasons to see what non-/vp/ people think about new games

It's understandably polar. It has some of the greatest strengths but also brought about some of modern pokemon's greatest weaknesses, all while hosting several controversial topics (namely story and Unovamons only in BW1). I'm in the camp of loving it though and honestly probably have some blind fanboyism towards it.

I went back to replay Black 1 a few weeks ago and was stunned by how much effort was put into Gen 5 that people tend to forget.
>Dynamic music depending on if you're moving or standing still, or if you're standing next to musician NPCs
>Music changes if you're at low HP, or if a gym leader is on their last pokemon
>Plot involvement from gym leaders, fleshing them out as actual characters and not just bosses to beat
>Shaking grass mechanic (which returned in ORAS)
>Actual difficulty
>Memorable characters
Among a ton of others. It reminded me how much I used to love Pokemon as a series, and felt fresh, and the shift to full 3D with gens 6 and 7 just felt like they were lacking something that made the previous gens great.

B/W had the better story, but BW2 was more refined and had a lot more postgame to give it the edge in my opinion
