That would only be true if the core game coming in 2019 does the same thing, which is most likely not. This game is meant to draw in the Go fanbase and slowly convert them into playing the traditional games. This is quite literally the gateway Pokemon game.

We take for granted how complicated a pokemon's stat sheet is
Picture yourself a casual Go player who is only used to Lvl and CP suddenly having to learn about EVs, IVs, all 6 stats, nature,ability, etc...
We'd be lucky if they keep all stats, natures and abilities

This. In a game series about catching a team of friends that you carry with you through the best and worst of times, you are not allowed to use the team that got you through the Pokemon League. If you want to be competitive then you have to go through a breathtaking amount of RNG manipulations to get perfect IVs AND make sure your nature is right AND make sure your ability is right. And in some cases you have to jump through the hoops to pick up certain moves that ONLY be achieved via breeding. AND you still have to do the proper amount of EV training to actually maximize all those stats. And you have to do that for every single Pokemon you intend to use competitively.

That. Is. Fucking. Ridiculous. The more you understand Pokemon, the more you realized how much RNG and bloat there is in doing even simple shit. Which is why a lot of people say fuck it and just inject. Or they say fuck it twice and just play on Showdown where they can just skip to the fun parts of Pokemon.

The thing, you don't need to really pay much attention to any of that stuff to get through the game. This is especially true in games like XY or SM which give you extra tools to brute force the game.

Some of that translates to GF needing to trim some of the fat with how Pokemon gain and utilize stats. If everyone is gunning for perfect stats anyway then I see no reason why they shouldn't just axe IVs entirely and just have stats differentiated by EV spreads instead.

Some of this is just GF not using their own system to teach players about their own game. Here's an idea, instead of saying "[Pokemon] was burned" leading player to think it's just the fire version of poison, instead you say "[Pokemon] was burned, ATTK has been halved." That way a new player realizes the value of Burn and why a move like Will o Wisp is valuable. I wonder how many casual players have no idea of the value of Pursuit or Volt Absorb because NPCs NEVER switch out? You can make a little minigame that shows players that SpA hits SpD and ATTK hits DEF. Or hey casual players are used to Pokemon GO right? So have one of the screens have your Professor mark tell you the highest and lowest BASE stats of the Pokemon your facing and give a quick blurb about it. Like if I'm fighting Chansey have the dude say "Her special defense is super high, you should maybe use physical attacks." That way the casual player will not only understand how the stats work but also may understand Pokemon roles too. But since he only mentions base stats it wouldn't tell what your EV spread is which can still throw off more experience players depending on what you do.
