From gen IV, Heart Gold or Soul Silver. From gen V, Black or White if you don't mind dex restrictions, their sequels if you do. You don't have to play the first to understand the sequels. If you really want to try out the 3DS, God knows why, get Omega Ruby or Alpha Sapphire for gen VI. For gen VII, Ultra Sun or Ultra Moon.
