Pokemon Switch could have had an overworld like pic related (with the style of Kanto obviously, not medieval like on the pic) but instead it's a revamp of the GB map with SM graphics...

Ni no kuni is inoffensive bland ghibli art with a severe lack of shading. The game also doesn't even have working mirrors. But ignoring the character-design. The world actually has scope to it so it feels better when traversing it. I prefer something closer to Colosseum/Custom Robo though.

The SM graphics make the map (which is an oversimplified map designed for the GB) feel too small.
On the GB it was okay because it was 2D and with simplified graphics, so your imagination could work things.
But here? Kanto will feel extremely small, much more than it ever did

Did the anime not feel like pokemon because it took days to get from city to city and things werent arranged on a grid? Pokemon was never mean to have a tiny world as a defining feature
You have to understand that the simplified maps of the original games weren't meant to be some ebin "special style".
It was just that, like in all RPGs at the time, overworlds had to be simplified to put up with hardware limitations
Now that's no longer the case, so these dumb revamps of 2D maps feel extremely dumb

The graphics are not offensively bad, but they are pretty mediocre. Game Freak came back to the chibis and square-ish maps even after they ditched it for Sun/Moon.

My biggest problem with these games is, that the grafics, proportions and map-design just don't fit together. On one hand 3D objects, on the other freaking square tiles. On one hand acceptable houses, even if they lack details like everything else in the trailer. And then we have big-head characters again that just don't fit in!
Sun and Moon showed us what can be done with routes and maps, even if it wasn't perfect. And they threw it all out of the window for lgp/lge, because that would take more time or like they properbly would say it "takes away from the nostalgia". : /

Go is a skinnerbox. Plain and simple. At least, us&um are games. They aren't just skinnerboxes that entice you to make microtransactional purchases. Sure, if you had more fun with Go, that might make sense. It's more of a social experience than a game, but on a pure game design standpoint, Go is a skinnerbox while us&um are actual games.
