The game might be good but the monster designs will ALWAYS be shit. Im completely convinced that the only thing that has been keeping Pokémon above water is their amazing designs, other than that GF seems to shoot themselves in the foot every chance the get.

Do we know how the combat works? because if they copy Pokemon's combat as they're copying everything else I don't see it succeeding as an MMO, how are you gonna have parties with more than two others? They already showed instanced random encounters but how do others join you in battle? If all iteractivity there is between players is trading and battling this won't be much more of an MMO than Gen 6 with its PSS

I doubt it, we literally got key-chains and garbage as mon designs. I think the only reason people accept pokemon designs is because of bias and nostalgia. I think Temtem might do well and get better designs over time if they don't already have designs that can BTFO of pokemon.

Klefki and Trubbish/Garbordor always get pulled out as an example of bad pokemon! I think they're really cool all 3. But again it's a matter of opinion. We can always hope that temtem will give Gamefreak the giant kick in the ass they've been needing for a long damn while that's for sure.

They showed very little, but it seems like Pokémon with a few tweaks (like no RNG). Not sure if the trailer shows it, but there's a gif (too big to post here) on the "Combat" section in the Kickstarter description.

And they also said it is more of a single player experience with co-op support and online functionality than a WoW of sorts. So yeah, basically Pokémon with people on the streets.

One might think that, but they got more than half their goal already only yesterday.
Sure, it's a pretty small one, and most of it probably came before the announcement, but it's still promising.
Also, they have Switch release as a stretch goal, so it's more likely that fans of the genre will be getting both.

So Pretty much Gen 6's PSS but with passerbys visible, except maybe it'll require constant connection? I'd hate that.

It will be like the Disgaea level cap. You can only have a set number of generation of offspring each time better to avoid the PERFECT IV/EV/Nature/Moves/Shiny/Ability that is Pokémon today.
If you have to choose between perfect moveset or perfect stats spread the metagame will be better.
Not the current min/max shit of today.

Lack of randomness sounds nice superficially but it's going to cause all sorts of problems in balancing the game, and I doubt they'll be able to solve them.
It's not a good thing that you'd be able to map the next 5 turns of a battle with precision using a calculator with no chance of deviation or having to adapt to unforeseen circumstances at all. There is a blurry line between the optimal move and the safe move in Pokemon and often that is helped or solely made possible by accuracy/crits.

I think not knowing what your opponent's gonna do, which monster is faster for sure (if they have a speed stat like in pokemon) or the item it's holding (if there are held items) is enough uncertainty but there really needs to be more info on how battles work before we can tell for sure.

Do you know of the competitive game Duelyst ?
There is practicly no random in this game. It only affects spawn location of some creep and the rare pick from set number of a define pool.
Just like if the only remaining RNG in Pokémon battle were the number of strike of a Water Shuriken or something with an average equivalent not so recurrent in the gameplay.

The concept of Pokémon is just a monster fighting game with rpg elements, that's nothing anyone can claim copyright of. They can only claim the unique stuff Pokémon created like Pokéballs, Pokémon names, Pikachu, etc.

However managing turns like in pokemon (both you and your opponent choosing what to do at the same time) could be considered random by them and changed so that the infamous "prediction" is gone and I think that would certainly hurt the game.

Not that anon; but I've played Duelyst before, and I hate it. Almost literally every match is the exact same. The optimal deck for a given general is THE optimal deck for them, and it gets boring fast.

There is no way they could do that. It won't be the same genre of battle. Temtems have stats like Pokémon (We just don't know yet if EV, IV and nature would be in it) so the turn cycle is the same, each player select a move and then the monsters move according to the stats.

From a quick watch of Duelyst's steam trailer I see it's a card game, don't you draw random cards from your deck like in other card games?
Anyway, I also see it's mainly about board position, more like chess than like Pokemon, not really an apples to apples comparison.

There are a lot of things that let you draw specific cards so not so random.
And the randomness of a Deck is comparable to the randomness of a team. Wich pokémon, which ev/iv spread, which moveset selected, is by the meta a kind of randomness.
An ill meta is a boring meta without randomness

I tink Klefki is a poor concepts but a cute design and Garbodor is a good concept (because of Smogon and Muk - Solid/Gaz/Liquid) but a poor design (pipes? / crystals? as fingers)

Now Temtem has to show up some outstanding design that will be memorable (Concept&/or Design wise) to stand the competition on the long run
