They apparently don't want to do double duty of both introducing completely new players to more "complex" game systems and creating an all new region with all new Pokemon at the same time anymore, especially with all the feature creep the core series is getting, hence Kanto remake with simplified gameplay.
Thing is, the people who actually like Go who don't overlap with people who also play the core games (ie fans who just buy anything with Pokemon in the title) like a fundamentally different type of gaming experience. They want a game that has no bullshit and you just start playing and doesn't have a stupid amount of menu flipping and crappy dialogue to sift through before you get to go anywhere. Probably also want a game that's suitable for play in short bursts.
They'd probably gain nothing by cutting the core series games even if LGPE ends up outdoing it because the audiences are completely different.
