1. It was likely meant to be a Dragon Quest reference, so they might have been fought in the wild for LOTS OF EXP, but you have to KO them before they transform otherwise your EXP gain would be just if you were fighting your Pokemons species
2. Likely a Steel type, which was probably to allow it to switch into things better so it could transform
3. A higher base HP stat
