Some people are gonna buy Switches just for pokemon tho, so the whole "you're paying for MK8 & Splatoon2 too" does fall flat if those people just don't give a damn to those games.

I bought a Switch and I'm planning to buy the 3rd version of whatever gen 8 games GF is working on, but I'm sure as hell not paying for stuff I had available for free before.

Those things didn't cost money last generation. It seems like common sense to me that people don't like being charged for shit they were never charged for before.
Personally I'm hoping all the online backlash leads to people making a Wiimmfi-esque custom server for all the games, so people with homebrewed consoles can play against each other without $20/year. I imagine some features wouldn't work since some things like the Wi-Fi Plaza in Gen 4 don't work on current Wiimmfi, but if I could give someone a friend code and trade and battle with them, and play some Smash with, that would be enough. Wiimmfi has random matchmaking for games like MKWii so I imagine we'd get even more than that if someone were to make it.

Because the people I know in real life who pay for PS4 online say they don't notice any difference from PS3 online. A lot of online games basically only use the server for matchmaking and then have P2P connections after players are connected, with the server only pinging back a few times to update things on said server like player ranks. Pokémon is like that when you use friend codes, and when Wii online shut down there were several people playing MKWii hours afterward because they joined up and didn't leave the lobby.
