I bought Heartgold a few weeks ago off Ebay.
Thought I was getting a legit one, was really excited to replay it as I haven't touched it in years.
The game kept freezing but I decided to just go with it, but then it got worse and worse.

Turns out it was a counterfeit.
Looks like I'll just have to play Crystal but fuck me, I really wanted to play HG.

Shit's expensive too.

No EBGames (Australia) has it outside of 2 which are 10 hours away from me, and they don't post.
Amazon Australia has it for 1 thousand dollars (no joke), so Ebay was the last resort for finding it at a decent price.

It wasn't cheap, it was 50 bucks.
I would get a R4 flash card but I have a 3DS and the last time I tried one, it didn't work.

It works in the 3DS; it's just a bit finnicky, or you had a REAL old one. The newer R4 gold carts work fine with it.

This card from this website is what I have, if you were wondering were you should get one. There's a lot of fakes out there but this retailer is as "legitimate" as flash cart sellers go.

I don't think so? If you're unhacked then you're probably on 11.6.0, and it works with that. I've never had a firmware update make mine stop working.
Older cards had to be set up with firmware, but according to the manufacturer, this one works right out of the box:

It probably won't hurt to order it directly from the retailer's site; I'm just used to nds-card.com since it has a good rep and they accept paypal with a workaround to avoid legal trouble.

Basically just don't buy one off amazon or ebay; the ones that show up on those sites tend to be fakes that are designed to break after a while.

Emulation is fine. but sometimes you want to just chill with a handheld playing it.

I've got a 3DSXL and the Pokeball 2DSXL, nothing beats instantly throwing CFW having every game possible and never buying a single one. When the switch gets CFW I'll actually be able to get mine out of it's box and use it.

I don't think so.
The stuff about NTRboot is a separate feature. Currently in order to hack a 3DS on any firmware above a certain point (11.3.0 i believe?) you need a flash cart and a magnet, so it's what lets you do that. In your case, it's pretty much nothing and you don't have to worry about it.

I think R4 cards work without hacking the 3DS but I would urge you to look into installing CFW (custom firmware, homebrew etc) You can go one better than DS games on the R4 card, you can install CIA eShop games directly on to the console. all digital games. and the best reason you can back up your precious saves way better than the shitty nintendo method.

If you're gonna get an NTRboot compatible flash cart, you might as well go the full nine yards. With that and CFW, every single handheld Pokemon game made to date is playable on a 3DS.
