So, any clue what these locations were based on? I most curious about the ruins in Chuugoku (the orange town) and the dead forest north of what was expanded to become Johto in the final.

Best I've got on the dead forest is that the yellow town with the well is Hiroshima and the forest is dead because of the bombings.

Orange town fits Hiroshima actually. It's placed in Chuugoku and has ruins.

The big grey city south of the desert with dead trees is kind of like Castelia city and Route 4 in Unova. The town with the small pond north with mire scrubland to the east is kinda like Lentimas town too. The bridge on the left of the big city matches up with Akashi Kaikyō Bridge in Japan too, I also seem to remember when we got the first BW images with the Skyarrow Bridge people thought that Unova was based on that part of Japan. Was proto Unova also in this beta map?

I've been looking at the spreadsheet, but I haven't found any graphical representation of the maps on it. I could just be being dumb (maybe I missed a tab), but assuming I'm right and it's not on the sheet, where is the map specifically from?
(As a side note to this, are there any other maps that aren't sewn together, like interiors? I know that quite a few interior maps are complete/in the game - most caves don't seem to be, but things like houses and the aquarium are - but I can't find any rips of them online. I'm betting whoever made this map is capable of doing that - do you know if they have?)

pokemon world was originally earth post wwIII. this why they talk about the space landing and color TV in the 60s in RBY, there are maps that show earth continents, and the layout matches Japanese cities.

After pokemon 2 (and even before), the major pokemon selling point was the anime. More people watch the anime than play the games. In this way the pokemon franchise was established in the greater pokemkn universe. this is also why the designs of pokemon changed to simple vector images to be easier to animate.

I think it's a right choice they made, this way we now have more detailed regions, and there's still room for more 2 or 3 regions based on Japan. And there's something interesting about it, they could do a full Japan with the new 2019 game, it would be huge and not in a retarded way,

I guess they're supposed to be vague representations of regions and prefectures of Japan, not just specific cities

Mini-Kanto is Kanto
The green city is Fukushima
The purple city is Aomori
Not-Snowpoint is supposed to represent Hokkaido as a whole I guess
Not-Canalave is Niigata and Sado Island
New Bark is Shizuoka?
Violet is the rest of Chubu, especially Nagoya
Goldenrod is Kansai
The gold city feels kind like a desert so it could be Tottori since it has some sand dunes
The orange city is Yamaguchi, maybe? Dunno what the Unown ruins are supposed to represent
Pink city is obviously Shikoku, probably Tokushima/Naruto because of the bridge
Red city is like not-Snowpoint and represents Kyushu as a whole
