Also, I think the "Vermilion Pokecenter" is supposed to be the Fuschia Pokecenter. "Don't Know" is Vermilion, and that space in the bushes is supposed to be the Safari Zone.

And I thought the Kanto we actually got in GSC was an abortion. This is so much worse. I appreciate the ambition they put forth in the beta, but thank fuck they dialed it back and just adapted Kansai for Johto.

It'd work if Pokemon was a standard RPG where you go into a town icon and then explore the towns. Then you'd be able to represent the whole of Kanto more abstractly, like other RPGs do. Unfortunately, Pokemon is more "1:1" scale.

The only ones removed are Viridian Forest, Mt. Moon, Cinnabar Island, Seafoam Islands and the Safari Zone.

I think Rock Tunnel was still the same.

Is it as accurate and full-featured as Kanto in the final product? Of course not! But, it's not trying to be so. Kanto here is only meant to be one town. The final release greatly cut down the scale of the region, and with that it made more sense to reproduce Kanto 1:1.

See pic related for a more subtle example of what was being done here, in a much older game.

I can try, even though it doesn't really matter.
In beta GS the 'region' actually represents the entirety of Japan and therefore each 'town' you come across represents each separate region or prefecture in Japan. The impression of scale in the beta is supposed to be larger in the beta GS map as opposed to that of the previous Gen, which is why Kanto here is squished into a town.
It's much more akin to the Dragon Quest 1 world being portrayed in DQ2, in which the area significantly scaled down and really only focusing on the most memorable and important parts of DQ1's map.

I honestly don't see why Kanto in the beta is such a big deal, especially when taken into context.

This is where you're wrong. Hoenn and Sinnoh weren't even a concept manifested in their thoughts at the time. They cannot disrespect something that doesn't exist at the time. Taking the entire region and squishing it into one city is disrespectful because it's already an established and respected design at the time. Taking something that's not only already done, but something that hardcore fans know extremely well and making it into that is disrespectful.

Shut the fuck up. The beta map is supposed to cover most of Japan so having Kanto being squashed down makes sense. It's just like how Alefgard was smaller on DQ II because again the idea is to show a sense of scale. As in Remember the map from the previous game? Well it was actually a smaller part of a bigger world. It's honestly a pretty cool thing not a lot of sequels do, I think Zelda II also did it and it was mindblowing when I found out.

Zelda 1 didn't exactly have numerous points of interest. It had plenty of secrets, certainly, but other than that, dungeons were the only notable landmarks. Reducing its geography to a smaller scale worked because its geography is all it really had. Pokémon RGBY, on the other hand, had plenty of important locations in its geography that are just plain missing in the beta.

I know it by heart, too. It has a couple different biomes and a bunch of hidden passageways. Most of the time, it is just monsters around a field. Meanwhile, Pokémon RGBY actually had towns and cities filled with NPCs that weren't shopkeepers or cryptic old men, spoke more than a single sentence, and brought the locations to life with local trivia.

The game was supposed to be released in March 1998, which was around 3 years from the release of Pokemon Red and Green which btw was then starting to become a hit. It wasnt until around 1997-1998 were Pokemon became the franchise we know today. When Pokemon 2 GS was being developed it was simply a quirky RPG on an old handheld.

Old Town is based in Kansai and from what we gather Ho-Oh is still supposed to be there. Maybe that's why they went with making the game based entirely on Kansai.

I didn't add caves originally because the prototype didn't have them either. I figured it'd be like Zelda /Dragon Quest II where most, if not all of the dungeons were missing since there's no reason to go back to them. But I left space for the caves anyway - here's Mt. Moon and Rock Tunnel.

Nah, you can go behind the buildings even in the old games, something can be ther even if you can't see it.

Except that only works if Kanto remained the same size. By scaling it down in size, you're not really fooling anyone. You keep Kanto the same, and build around it.

So, basically, the correct way to do it would be how the real GSC did, only scale the Johto portion of the game up to be 3 or 4x better.

I wish they would've just expanded Johto instead of adding any kanto shit in. In Johto games you end up at level 38-41 when you get to the league.. even in gen 1 you're level 43-44 going to the league.

Since the original idea was about travelling to japan as a whole instead of just Johto and Kanto, I kind of understand what their intention was due to limitations and stuff like that, and while trying to cramp up Kanto in just one big city sounds cool in context, they could still do much better.

It was probably just an still experimental version and there was the possibility of adding more stuff, but for an approach like that they could just made the whole approach of many rpgs with making a big world map where you could enter each location respectevily, I know it sounds like shit for Pokemon but I really like the idea of a whole journey through a whole country, it feels like the scope of things go highter.

Oh, and I forgot to mention I love your placement of the Pokémon Center. Even though one never existed there in RGBY, it is near the center of the region and has quick access to the more important buildings in the Celadon-Saffron hub. Very excellent use of map design, my friend.
