not really. it's just an awkward sprite. we don't know the lore behind it. this pokemon could be easily implanted with a different sprite and we all would be raving about it.

rattata and raticate are just rats. the list goes on. like i said, you don't know anything about the pokemon other than the sprite itself. there could be a fascinating reason for why the seals adapted to using the fire balls. if they used a different sprite, you would probably be all over the bandwagon for it.

Because that's all they need to be. You don't need another basic bitch seal Pokemon when there already is one.

If the design can't communicate an interesting idea by the design itself it's not a good design.

In the final game Firebreathers are still dressed like clowns and you mostly find them in caves

The demo map has a tropical area and there's location data for a "Mt. Fuji." These things fit fine in a tropical coast area, especially a volcanic one (no shortage of volcanoes in Japan), or they could literally swim in a magma sea and make their balls out of lava.
Somewhere like One Island/Mt. Ember in FRLG would be a perfect spot to find them.

a single stage fire type would have been nice in johto
its a hassle to get a fire type if you dont pick cyndaquil
Fire stone is annoying to get ,post game in GS
ponyta is not till before Victory road
vulpix and growlith are version exclusives
houndour and slugma are post game

So really only option if you didnt pick cyndaquil
is magmar or your stuck with vuplix/growlith until you get lucky with alan or till post game

It's a water/fire sea lion that can balance fireballs on its nose, how is that not interesting?

While I like it, and I feel it would get an evolution eventually, I don't think it fitted the rest of Johto mons.

I would reserve this mon, for example, to a region like Kalos.

Maybe if the ball it was holding was the actual Pokemon, like some sort of steam/magma coral then it'd be a little more interesting. Kind of like Komala.
