Entei isn't a very good lion though. He has too many strange elements. Plus, he's legendary. People want a starter or Pokemon you can use in your normal playthrough.

It's because it was designed as a predator for Pikachu before Pikachu was 100% the face of Pokemon.

Now the idea of any creature hunting that fucking shit goblin of a rat makes investors and designers go "eewwwwww noooooooo our horrible garbage pig of a mascot is perfect"

Ironically, this idea could be the perfect marketing push to make this betamon a rival to Pikachu in the anime. Like being a gen II Meowth.

Maybe Game Freak couldn't make a good use of this design and scrapped it in favor of other pokemon like Raikou.

Good point! As betamon and Spheal has the same shape, dot eyes and especially the muzzle. Felines and seals all have the distinct muzzle like every mammal in the carnivora order have.

This makes sense, Game Freak scrapped many early design just to reuse them later for newer gens.

Out of all the beta Pokémon that got scrapped, this makes me the most sad. The design looks really Pokémon-ish and with some minor tweaks it could definitely fit in with the more modern Pokémon. It's cute so it's marketable and the evolution is cool, so the line has a lot of appeal and marketability. What's worse is that before Incineroar, we didn't have a non-legendary tiger Pokémon (and even then, Incineroar isn't that muc of a tiger).

It's fine, it's just on two legs. Don't put down Incineroar to raise this betamon's status and I say that as someone who likes both a lot. You can play around with different tiger mons' concepts just fine.
