Literally they're the most annoying shit in the franchise. It's the reason why you buy 50 Max Repels and use them one after another.

At least with Gyms being secluded from Gen 7, trials were a decent enough replacement.

But with the way things are in Let's Go, you wouldn't have had random battles. You most likely wouldn't have had to battle at all if you didn't want to so I don't see why you'd have a problem with people wanting to battle the wild pokemon. They dont have IVs, the stats are autogenerated with barely any "grinding" involved on your part, you only battle CPUS and theyre not transferable to main core series. I like this mechanic. Wish battles were normal and throwing a ball turned into this minigame. Higher capture chances for how weak it is. There could be visual clues like the Pokemon drooling/catching it's breath/ looking visually tired etc. Wild battles shouldn't be that brainless. They should be interesting and fun.

It required at least a modicum of skill and finesse, to do the right amount of damage without knocking it out, to decide when to throw early and when to fight, and when facing much higher level legendaries you had to survive them attacking while you throw balls. Now it's all just rng with no risk attached.

The whole point of wild battles was to train and to weaken Pokemon by actually fighting them so they can be caught more easily. When you catch a Pokemon this way you actually fucking earn it.
Now you just get wilds that pop up and merely stand in front of you so you can repeatedly chuck balls at it like a retard

Now if you added more interesting alternative option alongside battling (like how Ash gets a bunch of his mons by solving some optional sidequest and they decide to come with him) that would be a bit different

The issue with the GO catching system is that yes skill can make it easier to catch, but there's no way to mess up. You can't accidentally KO the mon. It's just about rng deciding it runs away.

You're not looking at the big picture, only at capturing/training pokemon. Wild pokemon battles are a core part of the adventure. Remember all those posts about getting lost in Mt. Moon and attacked by hordes of wild pokemon? Gone now. You'll just run straight through areas and there's no danger or engagement at all. No sense of adventure, wondering what kind of pokemon will pop up next or if you'll be able to make it to the end of a cave or area with any items left. Not to mention it looks ugly as shit to have a random smattering of pokemon just standing around in areas, not doing anything and just kind of waiting to be captured.

inb4 "you suck if wild pokemon battles are challenging" that's not the point. The linearization and dethreatening of exploration means you won't stick around anywhere. You'll just run through areas, never stopping to smell the roses, never enjoying the adventure, going from point-to-point while having your handheld to the next cutscene. This is why Pokemon sucks now.

If you weren't an autistic breeder or playing a standard playthrough, where you don't have false swipe and probably have attacking moves only, Catching Pokemon required more of your attention since you had to factor in if you were going to faint the Pokemon or not when weaking it.
With GO, you couldn't fear fainting a Pokemon by attacking it too much.
Maybe if you didn't start with GO or didn't drop the series after Gen 1, you might of understood why the only catching mechanic was better.

I like that pokemon are now in the overworld, that's what I wanted for Gen 8. I wanted it just for immersion though not just to be able to skip all battles, and I wanted the wild pokemon to sometimes run at you and force you into a battle. But taking away your ability to battle wild pokemon at all and now you can only throw balls at them is completely a downgrade. Catching Pokemon and wild battles go off of the mechanic of "risk and reward". There's nothing actually stopping you from just throwing a Pokeball at a wild Pokemon right off the bat, you're risking a high chance of failure but are being rewarded with a quick capture. You can mitigate this with weakening the Pokemon, but now you're risking killing it on accident, with a greater chance of reward by getting it with only one or two throws.

This formula is fun at it's core because it allows the player to tackle a small challenge however they want, it allows someone like >>35782595 to play how he wants, and someone like >>35781799 to go all out with status moves like Spore and False Swipe. This creates depth.

A standout memory to me was hunting Latios way back in Ruby version, I didn't know about Shadow Tag so I just kept hurting it little by little until I finally caught it on Route 117. I risked killing it by getting it down to red HP, but was rewarded by catching it in that tiny 1 turn window. It felt great and I still remember it after over 10 years.

LGPE removes all of this, there's no risk, just throwing. You can use a Berry to up the chances and that's it. You're not getting that sweet catharsis for rolling a critical capture on a difficult mon. You're not getting the consistent satisfaction of raising a Parasect with Spore and False Swipe and catching near everything with ease. You're not going to have a single memorable capture because there's no nuance to the "gameplay" of hurling balls to something over and over till it gets caught. It took the worst part about catching a Legendary from the main game and made it the only way to play.

This shit fucking sucks.

In GO, catching only forces people to think while catching flying types that move around, which is negated by the berries they give you.
With the old system, you had to know what types a Pokemon is weak too, how strong their defenses are, and how many Pokeballs you have since they also don't give them out in the core games like they do in GO.
And while some Pokemon have obvious types for one aspect, unless you spoiled yourself, you're likely not going to know a Pokemon's secondary typing.
We may know that something like Gastrodon being part water or Drapion being part poison, but you would normally think they are also part bug and wouldn't thing they are part Dark and Ground respectively (if you fought them for the first time without spoilers). You could easily KO Drapion with Earthquake thinking it would be neutral.
Sure, it isn't complex what so ever, but it requires more thought than GO.

I actually never thought about it that way. I think you are right. My main complaint about the Pokemon Games post Gen 6 is their linearity and the lack of that adventuring feeling.
