Then there are people who say "well my little sibbling wants to play and I only have one save file, I might as well buy the other version." Then there are clueless grandparents/parents who buy both versions being oblivious that they are the same game, my parents bought me all three gen 1 games and I was too stupid as a kid to stop them.
In order to get all those extra sales, all gamefreak has to do is gate off a few pokemon you can easily get on GTS
