How come some types can only be accessed late game? By the time you can really start building a diverse team of cool mons you're already through the story and are so far over-leveled the fights aren't interesting anymore.

Their insistence on having Ice types be like this is SO strong that EVERY single Pokemon region besides gen 7 has a gym leader or elite four member that's an Ice type specialist, regardless of how many Ice types there actually are in the region.

It would be really refreshing if we got early game Ice types for once. And actually good Ice types for once. And more Ice types in general. Someone at Game Freak must really hate Ice...

Alola was the biggest offender. We got ONE new ice type, and it was ugly as sin. How are you trying to tell me freaking hoenn has more ice types than Alola, which has an enormous mountain on the third island?

USUM sort of rectified this. Smoochum and Delibird are both available very early on, while Cloyster can be obtained right after you get to Konikoni City.

Crystal version potentially lets you get smoochum after the 2nd badge if you manage to get it from the mystery egg. I think thats the earliest you can get an ice type in the series.

I get that Hoenn has a small ice area, but it's tied for second most ice types added with Sinnoh. I'm of course not counting forms since the first guy only counted crabominable.

To be fair to Hoenn, one of those is a legendary, and the others are just two evolutionary lines. Something like Kanto or Johto ends up looking like it has more in comparison due to the larger number of separate species.

If you do factor in forms, then Alola does slightly win out since it has Crabominable, Alola Vulpix, and Alola Sandshrew as standard species while Hoenn only has Spheal and Snorunt, but he is right in that that's pretty pitiful for a region that does have actual snowfall. Especially since I don't even think you can catch Crabonminable there, just evolve a Crabrawler if you dragged it along the entire game.

True, two lines and a legendary led to what happened with Glacia, so that's pretty valid. There are no wild crabominable, but you don't really have to drag a crabrawler along seeing as how you can catch them on any berry tree.

Still, I think the reason they usually don't like handing out Ice types to early is because Ice readily deals with common early and mid-game types like flying, grass, and ground. I think they could easily do it if they made an optional Ice cave right before you were up against the Fighting, Fire, and Steel gyms. Make it possible to get them earlier, but also make it not as key for the 'main' battles afterwards. It would still be a lot better than waiting until the 7th Gym to get them.

Alola's dex was fucked up and a lot of the Pokemon found in areas didn't make any sense at all, it's like they just chose Pokemon by random and through them somewhere in the game without actually thinking it over and if they suit the area they're found in.

Best way is probably to only hand out the worst ones early on. Like how ultra handed out delibird and smoochum, which both don't get good ice moves until ice beam or blizzard. They could probably afford to add some more of the frail first stages earlier in the game. Probably the ones that might be more of a pain to evolve. Most of them are stuck with icy wind, ice shard, or even powder snow as their best ice moves for a while anyways.

They had a chance with platinum, if they would have just committed to making Sinnoh snowier instead of just adding some snow piles to twinleaf town and that's fucking it. Like if there were some Snovers on route 4 or something it would have been perfect.

eevee is relatively easy to get early in most games, glaceon would have been a reliable ice mon to use if you could just use a goddamn stone to evolve it but lol.
