It's why none of the other drawings are completely accurate, they were purely from memory.

Original Chikorita WAS replaced just as Meganium was replaced. Middle stage starter evos are almost always the last to be updated.

Not the same anon, but those beta starters are awful. The water starter actually reminded me of the popplio line, which I don't happen to like much. The fire starter is just a fire-type pikachu, which evolves into a tacky-looking secondary fire dog. The final fire evo looks good but would fair better with better pre-evolutions and not as a starter.

It's actually quite sad because Chikorita is the one that needed replacing or redesigning the most.
It learns almost no good moves, has defensive stats on a terrible defensive type, and is by far the ugliest of the 3 starters as they were at launch.
I don't think I'd be alone in saying it's the worst starter period.
