I'm pretty sure the idea is to keep a narrative going.
They seem to be very attached to stories in Pokémon games having a distinct beginning, middle and end.

Elaborate. Are you taking issue with the statement that Pokemon is the largest media franchise of all time? Because defined by gross revenue alone, it really is. Companies that control multiple franchises like, say, Disney certainly make more money overall and have more total power, but if we're looking at single franchises (so breaking up Disney into just Marvel, Star Wars, Disney Princesses, et cetera) Pokemon comes out on top. Going by Wikipedia's numbers, it has had a total revenue of about $60 billion as of March 2017. Star Wars pulled in $42 billion up to December 2015.

And that really wasn't my point anyway. What I was getting at was that it'll take a lot more than $20 million to ever take a meaningful stake in Pokemon.

which is a shame because stories in pokemon fucking suck and are one of the worst parts of the games these days

Its only because of what the stories revolve around. They always focus on thw symbiotic relationship between humans and pokemon and give the player the same point of view. The "go through this challenge to become the best" point of view

Myatery dungeons stories are pretty good so if they could do something like that then maybe it'll get better.
