Wild Pokémon is a whole 1/3 of the draw. You weaken them, yes, but in the process you figure out how some of their moves work, hoe bulky they are, their resistances, etc. With LGPE's system there's none of that light experimentation.

It's something we never really thought about until the possibility of it being removed was brought up. Then we all realized how tedious and annoying it actually was.
We were ecstatic when they added a feature to automatically reapply repels, that in and of itself is indicative of how annoying these battles were.
They took too long to get in and out of, it was an actual waste of time, it punished you for exploring too much by constantly interrupting you every 15-20 steps.

I feel like this will make trainer battles more enjoyable

Removing random wild battles removes a large amount of annoyance from the game.
However in my opinion a better option for the game would have been to have two different modes to choose from. A GO like mode and the regular battling mode.

Wild Battles are still important for something like training newer Pokemon or for new players to test out moves, I'm playing through Crystal right now and training my freshly caught Bellsprout off of Graveller is such an efficient way to get decent EXP since Graveller is so slow and has a x4 weakness to Grass, in LGPE, I don't get this option, I'd have to send my Bellsprout into a trainer match, then switch him out so he gets 50% of the EXP which takes an extra turn and puts the new Pokemon in danger. If they're doing it like GO and you get EXP for captures, then I need to get a shitload of Pokeballs, capture a ton of shitmons, then release a ton of shitmon, this does not seem like a better alternative.

LGPE removes options for the player and how they play, lack of wild battles is nothing but a bad thing.

I see your point, but there is undoubtedly a way to train pokemon that we just haven't seen yet. Levels are still a thing in ADDITION to Go's CP system after all. As somebody who's been playing the games since the beginning, I'm enthusiastic about overworld wild Pokemon and changing how they are caught because it means the prospect of obtaining 800-plus entries in the Pokedex won't be nearly as exhausting.

Back when there were just 151, the old system wasn't so bad. Now it's an outdated vehicle for tedium.

Let's be honest here. These days, the actual Pokemon battles are a low point of interest among adult veterans of this franchise unless we're talking battling other players and the elites, things got so boring that people had to come up with challenges to make things more interesting such as the nuzlocke challenge. Not a lot of people really care about battling wild pokemon for reasons aside from having to do so to catch them, grinding their Pokemon to take on gym battles or for the edgelord power rush from taking out the weak ones. Most discussions among people still interested in the franchise equates to the following:

1. Childhood reminiscing
2. The designs of Pokemon
3. The slice of life elements in both the games and the anime
4. Ogling the female trainers/moms/gym leaders/etc.
5. Lusting after certain pokemon
6. Fan fiction of certain trainers (particularly Red and Gary/Blue Oak)

It had its purpose back then. But nowadays you can re-battle trainers and even the "on curve" trainer battles have gotten pretty easy, so there's no real need to grind anymore. Still don't now how I feel about no wild battles altogether though. It would be cool if some more dangerous Pokemon (especially in the later part of the game) still attacked you.

Hm, might be interesting, have some preset 'wild' encounters in each area, basically trainer battle encounters with the local apex predator, like a fuck you beedrill in viridian forest, or a pissed off graveler in mt moon, kind of like how they do raid pokemon in go or totem pokemon in sun/moon. That's literally why you get a starter in all the games. So that you can catch a wild pokemon safely without having to worry about it jumping out and attacking you.

I really like how GameFreak themselves forgot the whole point of Wild Pokemon battling you was that, for most of them lore-wise, they were battling you because they wanted to see if you were a competent enough trainer to handle them, and then subsequently capture them since Wild Pokemon are incapable of reaching their full potential, while a Captured Pokemon is.

Wild Battles serve three purposes

1. Finding and catching new pokemon
2. Training your pokemon
3. Slowing down/hindering/challenging player
4. Exhausting player resources

Number 2. can be removed in favor of more trainers to battle.

Number 3. is literally everything in the game from the beginning of the game to the game over / victory screen. There are obviously other alternatives to random wild battles here. but it requires a lot more effort from the devs without making the game dangerously short.

Number 1. Isn't easily replaced at all, without destroying exploration, and this is a huge problem.

Number 4. can be replaced by more trainer battles, same as number 2.

Essentially the idea of wild random encounters is so intrinsic to the concept of a jrpg, in terms of exploration, player progression, and game length that you Game Freak is not competent enough to replace it with something better.

But even with that description having Pokemon with you basically is still just a safety measure. So it would make sense to have battles not be the standard encounter/catching method. Maybe some of the more dangerous/wild Pokemon could have "pissed" meters - they fill up while you're trying to catch them and once they're full, you get into a battle.

Sometimes you fail to run from a wild pokemon, get damaged, get poisoned, etc. This in turn means you have to manage items to heal your pokemon, or tough it out and deal with your pokemon not being in an ideal state for trainer battles.

Believe it or not, pokemon was actually an RPG once, where getting to the next town was supposed to be something with a chance of failure to it.

Indeed. Nowadays it's more about just collecting cool monsters and exploring a new environment in the process (the latter has come to the forefront with graphics getting better). Looking at the latest gens, at leasst the singleplayer is not really supposed to be challenging anymore.

I meant "explore" in a more general sense here, as in "get to see/traverse a new region".

But you're right, they should improve on actual game-style exploration. Removing wild battles could actually incentivize that since "exploring" in a game sense is way less annoying when you're not stopped by a wild Zubat or Rattatta or Tentacool every three steps. And you've got to fill all that lost play time from cutting out wild battles with something - that something may as well be.

Yes but who's to say they won't get a little more crowded in later routes. And maybe some do charge. (Mankey, tauros and kangaskhan for example)

It doesn't change that there will be times when you accidentally run into one and you'll just do what you did when you had to battle but didn't want to-run away

So your argument is that the new mechanic is as bad as the old mechanic? Or is it that it wastes the same amount of time? For the second one at least, it is better, as running into a pokemon by mistake every once in a while is a MARKED improvement over running into one every 20 steps every time you step into a cave or go through grass.

Otherwise repels have their own little annoyances. I hate having to shuffle through hundreds of useless items to find them, sometimes i forget to buy them and dont realize until im in the middle of a cave, they still dont last that long and i fucking feel like im being wasteful using a repel for 6 patches of grass.

If they were smart they would let you just hotkey repels to a button like they used to do with fishing rods/bikes/etc

And instead of abilities and hold items that increase/decrease encounter rates, make those key items you can toggle. Give them as rewards for completing sidequests.

Removing wild battling entirely is a retarded way to go about it, but if they're looking to make a console Pokemon RPG the Pokemon appearing on the map is a good workaround.

Random encounters are a holdover from a time where we couldn't just show them anyway. They can still be hard to walk around or block your path. Nobody actually wants to play an old Pokemon RPG on a TV for anything other than novelty.

That said, I'm probably more enthusiastic than most about how LGPE is handling things because I think it will facilitate exploration better. GF had better not fuck this up by creating more simplistic "dungeons" that are literal hallways.

I think it could work if they had larger maps and had some simplistic behaviors for how various wild pokemon would act, such as rarer ones running away from you so you had to sneak up on them or chase after them, while others might actively chase after you or block your path.

It'd also be nice to have an element of obfuscation to it, so sometimes you don't know what's chasing you for a more random sense of encounters, but more important is just having room to evade and them not just walking around.

Trainer battles only do so much. Due to the fact that you can see all of them coming, it's often easy after one to ask if you should go back to the pokemon center. Wheras with wild pokemon, the route back is often just as risky as the route forward. Once you clear a trainer, you don't have to fight them again.

Wild pokemon serve to keep an area dangerous, and also work well in areas that shouldn't really have many trainers.

Except Breath of the Wild was good and well balanced. There's no doubt there will be influence, what we don't know is how much or how severely it will. One of the big risks right now, since we've yet to even see what Gen VIII looks like, is it's possible we'll see Game Freak cheap the fuck out on development re-using the LGPE engine just to dig the knife a little deeper and keep up to date on those wonderful casual features he made sure we've had all these years.

Gamefreak can just make a new key item that replaces repels. Just one click and wild mons don't show up untill you turn it off. That way wild battles are optional and gamefreak can casualize the game even further, without resorting to that shitty GO-mechanic.

I didn't like it at first because it changes a fundamental part of what makes the Pokémon world what it is.

But looking at the new footage I think it'll be better, especially since you are now seeing the Pokémon you want and effectively chasing it rather than running through grass hoping the battle music doesn't start. You also don't have to wait for the wild Pokémon to attack between failed captures. It'll just be more convenient overall IMO.

Probably because there is still plenty of rpgs that use it and those that don’t use monsters appearing on the overworld and just letting you run past them. Its just as equally annoying as going to the menu to use a repel. Also buying repel is resource management, you get rewarded with not being annoyed by random battles when you use it, all you want is to dumb the game down further because you’re a toxic normalfag with the attention span of a pigeon

Changing from random battles to overworld sprites is not necessarily the problem, its the removal of battling pokemon you encounter in the wild that is because it is literally dumbing down the game to incredible levels. Catching pokemon was a mechanic in a way and there were strategies to doing it effectively, especially when filling out your dex. People built mons specifically for avoiding shit like explosion, running away and weakening in general so that they could complete their pokedex more effectively or for going shiny hunting. Removing this mechanic is basically taking depth out of the game and thats what people don’t want. Its a bad idea in general to shift the tone of a series from having a semblance of challenge to being a braindead angry birds tier game.

That being said, i see no difference between running away from an overworld sprite or using a repel to avoid random encounters. Infact the former sounds a lot more fucking annoying.

I think maybe we have a problem with the way the journey is presented. Doing the Gyms isn’t always an outright goal that fuels you, but you’re expected to do it. Asking you to complete the Pokédex hasn’t felt like a real request in so long.

If it’s about the journey and you’re supposed to make what you want of it, then give us options. Otherwise, they may as well go full hog with trying to make battling and training really hype.

In the end, it's not really about the mechanics or difficulty at all, it's about gatekeeping. Other people who aren't as into Pokemon as you are playing it and enjoying it is more insulting of a concept to you than a simple mechanic being altered or removed. This is why there's such a visceral hate on here towards GO too, because despite not having all the mechanics of the base game, it's still played by millions of people and makes tons of money, and not many of these people are invested in the core games. If in-game money wasn't so fucking piss easy to earn, then you'd see the value of wild battles; they're there to strip the player of their resources, to force them to manage their inventory. What wild battles need is level progression, so you don't get bombarded with level 11 shitmons when your team has an average level of 55, and sped up transitional animations. I understand the frustration of going through a cave and getting stopped in your tracks every 5 steps to battle a fucking bat or a fucking rock, but turning the game into glorified Tamagotchi is not a solution. GenV did it nicely by lowering encounter rates and implementing rustling grass, dust clouds and bubbling water. On top of that, I'd implement a loot system, that lets you get drops like Reaper Cloth or King's Rock, etc. without the need of Thief or Covet.

now you get npcs that heal you in every cave, running away from fights is way too easy, poison ticks dont hurt you anymore and all other sorts of fuckups like that.

it really sucks. I can play some basic as fuck idiot game like dragon quest and get a way superior dungeon experience out of those because everything hits hard and I actually have to manage my inventory.

This. Wild battles were never fun with exception to legendaries, and the only challenge is trying not to kill them. They made a move based on making that one aspect easier (false swipe) which just shows how stupid and tired the mechanic is. I always wanted to run into Pokémon I can see and battle them as a separate part from catching, but I’ll take an entirely new mechanic over the same bullshit of like suddenly being sucked into a battle with a giant electric snake in an electromagnetic cave, completely ruining the potential to show off Pokémon in their natural habitat.

I have played literally thousands of hours of pokemon over the past 20 years, and easily 95% of that time was spent in wild battles. Removing them strips the game of 95% of its content. You might as well just read a fucking book at that point
