This was never said.

There are only two incarnations of Ash. The one from the anime universe (OS-SM), and the one from the I Choose You (Movie 20) universe.

There's no reason to believe that SM doesn't take place after XY.

I don't have the source right now, but one of the internal team (I guess it was one of the music team) revealed that it is internal information that it is a different ash, but it's no public information and done in a way as it seems to be. so it's easier to understand for kids and for people who return to the anime and don't need to know several skipped gens.

anyways the anime is still made in a way how people would be able to skip generations of it and still know the basics of what is going on and ash's past in kanto but thats about it. so in other words it does not matter if you watch XY or SM first the anime always acts as if ash observes stuff for the first time.

This is a thing that's been happening since gen 4. Every season, Ash walks into a new region and suddenly starts acting like a different person. DP Ash, BW Ash, XY Ash, and SM Ash might as well all be different characters. Most people just ignore how different XY Ash is from his older incarnations because they liked his portrayal.

Series is the correct term for the Pokemon anime though.

It doesn't have "seasons" in Japan, every region is considered a separate series. Only in the west do they pretend that it's all different seasons of a single show. (I.E. Sun & Moon is called "Season 20" in the west, and the Aether arc is the beginning of "Season 21")

It is evenpossible that the sun and moon ash traveled all prevous regions, gained all the same friends but is a different ash than the ash we know. there even is an episode in XY that supports this theory about multiverses and different ashes - it's the one he accidentally travels into another dimension and meets himself but his personality is different over there and team rocket are the good guys.

This never happened. The Japanese version has never made any explicit mention of how much time has passed, only that it's been "a while".

Any explicit amount of time is dub-only (like Ash saying it's been a year since they were last in Viridian City, that was never stated in the Japanese version).

I like the SM anime even if it's catering more to children with the comedy. The animation looks nice (stop saying "hurr durr look at this hideous still frame", if you know a thing or two about animation you'll know still frames can look ugly for the sake of an effect), and the show has proven to be able to have darker tones, for example, the Litten and Stoutland stuff. You don't need a specific sense of continuity or expect the new stuff to just be XYZ 2. Seriously, are you one of those Amourfags who actually expected Serena to go to Alola? Just live with what you have now. Don't expect stuff like that to happen, at least Ash isn't a moron like in Best Wishes.

This, They're starting to play the anime similar to games. For example I have a kyorge from sapphire. we all saw the ending of XY, it got an obvious ending. there was no "to be continued" or "see you next time" etc... SM is internal considered a spin of experiment because of dropped viewer ratings, while they try to make the public think it's the same series. therefor no announcment saying so. everyone here is right. just a different view on things for everyone.

Animated shows change their art style a lot.

Ash takes the island challenge, just like he challenged gyms in the previous regions, and is eager to learn about the culture and Pokemon of the region. How is that any different from how he was previously? He might act a little bit sillier due to the tone, but he's still ultimately the same character; a fun-loving kid who's eager to learn new things and face strong opponents.

He stayed at home with his mom for a while, and they won a family vacation to Alola while they were out shopping in Pallet Town. The scene of Ash dropping off his Poke Balls happens after they won the vacation to Alola.
