I could see them going to Johto next, but reworking it so its even more centered on Kanto pokemon than the originals. Include a few more noteworthy Johto pokemon like Togepi and Ho-oh, but otherwise avoid scaring them off with anything too wild. Having a singular "Let's go to Johto!" but keep Pikachu on the box and offer it as a starter alongside Eevee and Marill.
