Yeah, I know, same as a lot of the features they cut.
Still a shame, although really I felt pretty happy that USUM gave us 4 more lovely UBs and a way to get as many as I want for the first 7.
If we at least can't have more UBs, I hope they don't pull a gen 6 with new bug type species and we get more that are as high quality as Golisopod, Araquanid, Pheromosa, and Buzzwole.

Same here. Wish they expanded on the Ultra Space worlds more, Guzzlord's was great though.

I really wish more Ultra beasts other than Poipole would have had evolutionary lines. Even if it was just a handful more of them, it would have really helped to make them to better feel like pokemon from another dimension.

Honestly, I have the opposite problem. I like both Poipole and Naganadel, but it felt weird for a UB to have an evolutionary line. I wouldn't mind seeing pre-evolutions of the UB's we already have, though.

I ask myself the same. While I understand how they may weird out people, they are creative enough that it should be easy to imagine them in different situations if they were to explore the Pokemon world (or our world, for that matter).

I think the main reason it feels weird is due to them being the odd ones out among all the UBs, but I do feel like having multiple stages would help dissuade the notion they give off of all being legendaries or whatever.

Plus it would let them emphasize the alien nature by giving them some really weird evolution conditions.

Many UBs seem to produce without eggs, so that's why I assumed they don't have pre-evos. While it's not outright stated, Kartana and Nihilego both appear to grow as sessile organisms until maturity, and Celesteela appears to grow in the same way that bamboo itself does, albeit with a launch stage and longer growth period.
Guzzlord could probably do eggs I guess.

In that vein, maybe the fact that Poipole lives near humans is the whole reason it's capable of evolving: a symbiotic relationship; very much like how cows wouldn't be able to survive on their own due to the fact that they produce too much milk and calves wouldn't be able to consume all of it, but in this case, with more benefits towards Poipole/Naganadel (as they are the ones being fed by the humans, while they provide protection for their trainers).

UBs are pretty neat and I'm hoping we get more of them in Gen 8, although that seems unlikely. I like them all, but I'm more attached to Xurkitree, Kartana and Poipole/Naganadel

I love all the designs for Ultra Beasts and even though it's kinda the point of their designs to look way different from anything we've seen before I've got some mental block going on to where I can't accept Pheromosa, Buzzwole or especially Celesteela as pokemon. Celesteela to me feels like it would fit in perfectly into SMT. Also Guzzlord seems like it could fit into Kingdom Hearts

What? Ultra Beasts are a subgroup of pokemon, since UBs are undeniably pokemon by all game mechanics. Uncatchable "not pokemon" shouldn't exist in these games at all. I think the Nihilego Lusamine fusion battle was a horrible mistake as it is.

I didn't say it wasn't. The problem with the idea of introducing uncatchable pokemon (or "totally-different-monsters-that-are-not-pokemon") is that their purpose is only story based. They play a role in the plot, you have AI bossfights or something, and that's it. You can't use them or do anything with them after the story is over, they were just flavor and nothing more. The only way it could not be just story based was if fighting uncatchable monsters became a frequent and integral game mechanic, which would really make pokemon into a different game.

The game is pokemon, it's about pokemon. Excessive focus on monsters that have been arbitrarily declared to be not pokemon and useless as pokemon sounds dumb.

In general, simpler designs tend to look better. I wasn't saying complicated designs are inherently bad though, it just depends and of course there's some amount of subjectivity involved. Buzzwole and Guzzlord are just over the line for me personally.

You've traded having a bunch of forgotten-after-a-generation boxstuffers for memorable encounters and something to make postgame item grinding more interesting.

Indeed, but the UBs are of a drastically dangerous nature most of the time. Celesteela for example can torch entire forests and suck the water from the surrounding area dry easily, causing plants to wither and die. The Pokemon Mystery Files images show a number of images that depict the power that other UBs can use to inflict harm to the organisms surrounding them.
Destructive foreign species like Yungoos do it on a smaller scale that is more akin to a pest (although Yungoos I recall being based off a severe issue in real life that has caused the extinction of dozens of Hawaiian bird species).
Creatures like Alolan Sandshrew and Ninetales are of the harmless variety and Sandshrew has integrated itself particularly well, becoming food for wild Sneasel.

I think it's a difference in scale and threat. Sure you can have invasive species just be invasive species. That's not too out of line since invasive usually just need to be uncontrolled and or outcompete native species. For example, yungoose and ratatta are based on Hawaii's horrible attempt at early bio control. What we got out of that was the regional early normal types. The UBs on the other hand are able to add a layer of menace and stakes to the invasives while additionally being more alien and powerful for impact. Plus, it fits/ clashes with Aether being a conservationist group and gives them something threatening to do.

I like the concept of UBs, I hate how it was executed. Having alien creatures that are unexplainable and just kind of invade without clear reason? Neat idea. Kind of lovecraftian. Having them be catchable and leaving hints as to what they are? Not so much. See because they are catchable and the games tell us to care for them they basically become just some really weird and ugly Pokemon that you dump on your PC or use only because of their minmaxed stats. In general this whole alternate reality stuff gives me headaches, making them appear just because and boast them as general threats to all existing life would've been so much better and interesting. Instead of catching them you would just drive them back where they came frome. And I think the fact that we didn't know where they live and that they are considered "normal" lifeforms there is much more interesting, because it leaves you thinking "why do they exist? are they Pokemon? do they serve a greater purpose? where do they live? why do they come here?". It keeps you interested and doesn't just make them weird and out of place Pokemon from alternate realities. This is a general problem with worldbuilding in a lot of other franchises though, not really one exclusive to Pokemon. I find unknowning better than trying to painfully overexplain otherworldly things. Makes them more "otherworldy", you know?

This is UB Fungi, and it's fairy/fire. It's based on the fomes fomentarius and fairy circles.
This creature can produce flammable spores that ignite with the flames of its flamethrowers arms.

Well in USUM you can catch most of them multiple times, so I dont think they count as legendaries, but I do get your point about them not having evolution progression and I think that is part of the reason I dont like them either

The game counts them as legendary and their concept shows that they don't evolve like regular pokemon. They grow like real animals. Catching immature forms of some would work, but not others. I could imagine using young Buzzwole or Stakataka but not young Niheligo

Anyway yes, but I also think it should be expanding because of predatory stance at least?
Because in the game it is roughly all the same scale when it's lounging around and even first time encountering it when it hovers over mc it doesn't expand like that in scale.

I love the UBs, but I kinda feel that they came in a bit too late into the franchise. It's cool that they wanted to take a more solid perspective in establishing what would be considered culturally xenological anomalies in a world that's already inhabited with various magical monsters, but the sheer variability encompassed by six generations of preceding designs and ideas makes their concept seem a tad bit more trivial than impactful; primarily due to the already inflated roster of legendaries, I guess.

I agree with the sentiment that it's a bit boring that Ultra Beasts are "solved", i.e. we know basically everything about them from a story/lore perspective, mostly because it means that they will probably not be further explored in future games.

But something to remember is that UBs aren't the first extra-dimensional Pokemon we've heard of. Like the books in the Dimensional Research Lab talk about, there's a few other Pokemon that normally inhabit parallel/alternate universes. Even the Unown seem to inhabit some weird primordial pocket dimension. UBs just come from slightly more comparable universes to ours. While this does diminish their uniqueness a little, it makes the overall world more cohesive, which is a plus in my book.

It's the biggest franchise in history, what makes you think it's anywhere near completion? I mean, if it turns out that we have 50 generations of Pokemon before Japan ceases to exist, bringing them in on gen 7 won't seem too late at all.

GF should continue to add new and interesting elements to their games.
