Me too. Much like Pokemon Colosseum, it made me try out all the pokemon I caught, since it was all a bunch of unknowns and new things. My team was constantly changing and shuffling in and out new members. Game Freak will never do something like that again.

Hoenn managed to pull it off. Most mons were either completely new, were Johto mons that nobody ever got to use because they were postgame, or were placed pretty late in the game.

Why reinvent the wheel to make a new bat, rock, and jellyfish when most people aren't going to use them anyway? Better question, why make them specifically the same in regards to number of stages as well to make the replacement and comparisons even more obvious?

This. There was a perfect blend between old and new that gives freedom to the player. That's the reason I can't create a finalized team in those games, because it has a lot of options everytime you play through it.
Unova just forces a certain set of pokemon and you and every other NPC just uses similar pokemon throughout the entire game.

Pretty much this. During my first Black playthrough I used many mons which I originally wasn't too fond of, but they eventually grow on you and inevitably become your bros. There comes a point where you don't even care about the design anymore, just all the battles you went through together.

I'm personally just not as big of a fan of Gigalith compared to Boldore. I think the weird three-legged rock crab design is rather charming, but Gigalith feels weird with its giant knee spikes and weird reverse-triangle claws.

Fully agree that it should have been a special attacker though after how much they build up it using energy attacks.

I feel like the only way that would have worked with Gold/Silver's style is if they basically made a game that was 'two regions' from the start.

Pretty much have a mainland with mostly old pokemon and a few new ones as rarities, and then have a large island that's almost entirely new pokemon that you have to hunt down. But it needs to be pitched properly in such a way so that it's more of sense of starting somewhere normal and then being able to go somewhere exotic later on. Rather than GS, which was being told you were somewhere exotic, but finding everything normal, until you went back to somewhere normal in the postgame and a bunch of new exotic stuff was there.

The only problem with Vanillish is that Vanilluxe has the exact same face as it does. If Vanilluxe had been more divergent then it wouldn't be anywhere near as bad, but as it is it just seems kind of lazy.
The Klink line similarly would be improved if the evolutions weren't both copypastes of their previous stage with some more stuff added.

It depends on how you present it. Hoenn had enough land variety but not enough water variety. Alola has 400 but it works well because they're well spread out over the islands, so each island isn't overwhelming you.

I am too. Playing BW when it first came out and the ROM wasn't even translated was the most fun I've ever had playing a Pokemon game. Everything felt new again. I had no idea what anything was, and I couldn't even read the moves. Plus, handholding doesn't work when you can't read moonrunes, so I had to actually explore the world. I unironically hope they make another game where you can only use the new pokemon.

People found other things to complain, showing that this isn't an actual issue - it helps that Kalos has very high variety, even if it's species of previous generations.

No, it fucking doesn't. They did the same shit with gen 2 and completely relied on gen 1 for variety so gen 2 ended up having horrible distribution of new pokemon and no personality of its own. With Kalos this was made even worse because every route is absolutely bloated so it's even more work to find new shit.

Just look at pic related. You can not possibly tell me that this is ok. Why does Zubat need to be in every cave in every game and have the highest encounter rate. Why does Alola have Magikarp be able to be encountered in every fishing spot in the entire game. I should not be finding Magikarp in fucking Poni Island. Why is Zubat lazily thrown into Diglett's Tunnel in Alola. Why do they insist on having these things instead of giving the slots to literally any other Pokemon that lives in caves or the water.
